You Lead

We all lead someone; co-workers, a team, students, volunteers, a spouse, your children or even friends. You lead.

I recently saw this on a friend's Facebook post and it really resonated with me. When I think of leaders I think of principals, curriculum people, people that lead meetings I attend,  reading experts like Donalyn Miller and the CAFE sisters, etc. I don't think of me. When I read this I thought about all of my students years past, and my own children. It's crazy to think that I AM a leader. Over the years, I've had hundreds of sets of eye watching me lead daily. That is a humbling thought and a very scary thought. It's scary to think about what an influence I can have on so many young people. It's really made me consider HOW I lead. This is something that should always be in the front of my mind because there are always eyes on me. Good quality leaders are hard to find. I hope I can be that to at least some of my students.

  1. Brittany, you are a natural born leader. I am certain ALL of your students benefit from your commitment, passion, and hunger to grow. Teachers from across DISD have evolved and stretched themselves because of the stories, strategies, and tips you share. Your FB quote is definitely worth remembering, and as I read your post, the famous line from from Spiderman kept creeping into my mind. "With great power comes great responsibility." Leadership is a gift and burden. You've been blessed with both.

    1. Thanks Tenille for your kind words! And just so you know, that is also a beer slogan. "With great beer comes great responsibility". Miller Light, I think!!

  2. I think I will share this post with my students. I teach high school and I feel like so many of them need to know that they are leaders too. They can lead their brothers and sisters, their classmates, teammates, and who knows who else! They do lead. And it's important to think about what kind of leader you want to be.

    1. At high school age, being a positive leader is a huge and difficult responsibility! It scares me to think of my personal kids(5 and 9 months) growing up.

  3. I need that reminder - I should put that quote on my mirror, better yet, my computer - something I look at more often than my own image!

  4. Once you are a toddler there is always someone looking up to you in some way. Great reminder for us and our students.

  5. So important to name the ways you lead. Giving these actions a name make them repeatable.
