Comment HELP!

I am a 1st time slicer and one of my favorite parts about SOL is reading my comments. I love to read the encouragement, stories, and wise words of others. Although comments are my favorite part, I have to admit I'm not very good at leaving comments! It seems a little overwhelming to me and I don't really know where to start. There are so many slicers!!

What is your comment strategy? Do you even have one? Here are some of my questions...

-how many comments do you leave?
-do you continue to post on the same blogs or random blogs?
-how do you pick who you are going to leave a comment for?

Thank you for your tips and advice!

  1. I always make sure to do at least three comments, but usually more. Since I have been part of SOL for several years now, there are some blogs I revisit regularly. It's like a visit with friends. But I also just scroll through the links and click on links that sound interesting to me. I read many more posts than I leave comments at, which sometimes bothers me, but I just don't always have a specific comment come to mind. My comments are a mix. I try to respond to the writing, like mentioning a favorite line or phrase, or responding to the voice of the writing. Sometimes the comment is more related to the content, maybe sharing something similar or sharing an opinion on an issue. Another way to respond is to go to the blogs of those who comment on yours or to reply directly to their comment. As you can tell, I don't really have a strategy. I just try to enjoy! I hope you do, too.

  2. There is no right or wrong way to comment. Sometimes I comment on the writing craft. Sometimes I respond to the moment of life being shared. And, especially during March I often try to simply encourage new slicers to keep being a part of SOLSC. Durng the year I choose who I comment on with a combination of blogs I follow in my feed as somehow I have connected with the writer over the years and scrolling through the links. I tend to post on Blogger posts simply because (long story) WordPress is more challenging for me and I have to post through my Twitter profile. It seems so many more people use WordPress so that naturally narrows it down for me. I also tend to start looking at the links at the top (most recent) as they are likely to have less traffic than those who posted first and everyone has had an opportunity to see.

  3. Commenting can be so rewarding and so challenging at the same time. For some dumb reason, I type comments and they seem to disappear. It's quite frustrating. For example, I just wrote a well thought out response to your question, and when I hit the publish button, it was gone. Gggrr first! I am learning to copy and paste my work before I submit it.

I do think it's important to contribute to the conversation. I love providing and receiving comments, but I don't do it perfectly. I attempt to provide an average of one to three comments daily. Some nights I am too tired, and I make up the missed opportunities on days when I have more time. Because I have real life friends participating this year, it's important for me to read their blogs daily. This limits the number of stranger's blogs I read, but that's okay. I am so glad you are part of this challenge, and I know you will make lasting connections that shape and change who you become as a writer, a teacher, and a human being.
